Mayo Clinic Radio: Shoulder Issues The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint with a large range of movement. Because the shoulder join is so mobile, it tends to be more susceptible to injury. Shoulder pain can stem from many different causes, including sprains, strains, tendonitis or rotator cuff injury. Conservative treatments, such as rest, ice and physical therapy, sometimes are all that's needed to recover from a rotator cuff injury. If your injury is severe and involves a complete tear of the muscle or tendon, you might need surgery.
