And the risk goes up with age. Shingles is the blistery rash that happens when the chickenpox virus is reactivated. While it isn't a life-threatening condition, shingles can be painful. Vaccines can reduce the risk of shingles, while early treatment can shorten a shingles infection and lessen the chance of complications.
