This week, we will analyze the positive and negative impact of the corporate world on public eduction. Our guests are Stan Karp, the Director of the Secondary Reform Project for New Jersey's Education Law Center, and Editor of the Rethinking Schools journal, and John Kuhn, Superintendent of the Perrin-Whitt Consolidated Independent School District in Texas. John has also authored two books: Fear & Learning in America (2014 Teachers College Press) and Test-&-Punish (2013 Park Place Pubs.).

Rethinking Schools

At a time when racial and class inequalities are growing in our country, we believe that any vision of schooling must be grounded in "the common school." Schools are about more than producing efficient workers or future winners of the Nobel Prize for science. They are the place in this society where children from a variety of backgrounds come together and, at least in theory, learn to talk, play, and work together.

John Kuhn
John Kuhn is a public school administrator in Texas and a vocal advocate for public education. His “Alamo Letter” and YouTube videos of his 2011 speech at a Save Texas Schools rally went viral, as did his 2012 essay, “The Exhaustion of the American Teacher.”
