Student Exchange with South Africa

Much of the world is focused on South Africa and the 2010 FIFA World Cup and South African remains a focus for today’s World Footprints broadcast. Today, Tonya and Ian will introduce an extraordinary student exchange program between the University of Missouri and the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. Then you’ll hear about Nandi, a South African manta ray who Tonya got to swim with at the Georgia Aquarium.

For over 12 years, the University of Missouri has been a formal academic partner with the University of the Western Cape, a college founded in 1959 for black students just outside of Capetown, South Africa. The University now serves students of all races with a comprehensive educational program.

World Footprints: The Georgia Aquarium
Ian and Tonya recently visited the largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta (where Tonya actually got to swim with the whale sharks!) . The aquarium is a world-class entertainment destination, but it’s main goal is to be the leading facility for aquatic animal research and conservation. Christie Cobb Hacke of the aquarium joins the program to talk about what they’re doing to leave positive footprints.

Rodney Uphoff
Rodney J. Uphoff is first Elwood L. Thomas Missouri Endowed Professor of Law at MU, where he also served as the associate dean of academic affairs for three years. In 2006, Uphoff was selected to be the director of the University of Missouri South Africa Educational Program, representing the four University of Missouri System campuses. He also directs the School of Law’s study abroad program in Cape Town, South Africa. Before joining the MU faculty in 2001, Uphoff taught at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, where he served as a professor and director of clinical legal education and ran a criminal defense clinic for 10 years. From 1984 to 1988, he directed a criminal clinic at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Before becoming a law professor, Uphoff was a public defender, including service as the chief staff attorney of the Milwaukee Office of the Wisconsin State Public Defender. He also worked for Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown in Milwaukee, concentrating in personal injury and products liability litigation.
