Correcting Child Abuse Statistics
Christopher Wildeman, PhD, Associate Professor of Sociology, faculty fellow at the Center for Research on Inequalities and the Life Course, faculty fellow at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University recently conducted a study at Yale that found that approximately 12% of American children will suffer from neglect or physical, emotional, or sexual abuse before they turn 18 years old. He explained why his research yielded dramatically higher rates of maltreatment than official government figures. He offered suggestions for changes in public policy to deal with the problem.
