When it comes to buying auto insurance, research shows there is a significant gender gap. And there’s not much anyone can do about it. Then, you might assume that hard drug use is most common among younger people. But one expert says drug use is skyrocketing among older Americans.

Statins and Exercise
Statins, the most widely prescribed type of cholesterol-lowering drugs, have prevented millions of heart attacks and saved countless lives. But John P. Thyfault, PhD, Professor of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, Director of the Health Activity Center at the University of Missouri conducted a study that found that statins may also counteract the benefits of exercise, the other tried-and-true way to boost cardiac health. He explained why doctors usually prescribe drugs, rather than recommending exercise or dietary change. He also talked about how much exercise can be effective for people dealing with high cholesterol.

Miriam Boeri
Miriam Boeri is an Associate Professor of Sociology. Her research focuses on ethnographic studies of drug user populations and alternatives to incarceration. She has received funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an agency in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Findings from her studies were reported in numerous conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Her book on women who use methamphetamine describes how addiction intersects with social roles, relationships, and political trends, and proposes what can be done to reduce the problematic use of drugs. Two of her articles were reprinted in anthologies of drugs in American society, and she contributed a chapter to an international handbook on qualitative research in criminology. Through her research, Boeri aims to reduce the adverse health effects associated with drug use and the harmful social effects on drug users through a better, more holistic understanding of drug use and the impact of drug policy.
