Four National League batting titles, one of only 11 players to bat over .300 ten times. 2008 hits for his career, with 348 doubles, 134 home runs and 860 RBIs. A 1975 All-Star Game MVP (shared with John Matlack), three NLCS appearances, and of course, 1979, the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Not a bad career for the man also known as Mad Dog.

Sports and Torts: Hall of Famer Juan Marichal

Except for Sandy Koufax, Juan Marichal was the best pitcher of the 1960s. His 191 wins exceeds Bob Gibson’s second-place 164 by a huge margin. I He’s the only pitcher of the decade with more complete games (197) than wins. His 2.57 ERA is bettered only by Koufax’s 2.36 and Hoyt Wilhelm’s 2.16. He’s third in innings pitched , and his 45 shutouts lead the decade. His 3.66 strikeouts-to-walks ratio is topped only by Koufax’s 3.73. But he never won the Cy Young Award.
